Okay, gonna play devils advocate a bit here cause I think its an interesting topic in general. But for starters, I dont consider AI art to be real art. And I strongly disagree with stealing from artists to train models
That said, I saw a comment comparing AI art to photography and I actually do think its a decent analogy on a technical level. You can take a picture on your phone very easily (comparable to entering a prompt), but you can also get far more technical and involved with equipment and learning about ISO, aperture, etc (or adjusting generation settings, understanding how genAI works, small specific tweaks outside of just prompting for certain results, etc). As someone who knows just a tiny bit more than the basics of "push a button" (and enter a prompt), I think that they can be compared from a skill standpoint, but not quite from a creative one. Just something that I thought had a valid point to it. But again, only really on a technical level lol
That said, I do think that (ethically trained) AI is okay for artists to use as a TOOL, and not a final product. If you have an eye for anatomy and can spot mistakes, then you can generate references of specific poses, for example. Or to maybe test out basic concepts in the planning phase, to save time sketching (also applies to AI music, in that it can be inspo but not final)
I also think theres some merit to uses like retracing your existing line art so its a better resolution. Its the kind of tedious task that can slow things down (ask me how I know lmfao). But the main thing here is that you know what youre looking to accomplish and the concepts are all your own, AND you are transforming it in some way, not just claiming the output as your own
Just for some general info, there are settings where you can indicate how close you want AI to stick to an input reference image. By keeping it very close to the original, you can essentially copy the image at a higher resolution. Ibis Paint X has a feature that I assume functions similarly, so again I do think that small adjustments like that to enhance your own work is acceptable (comparable to adding filters ig)
Its a tool. If your art program automatically spits out art for you, thats just straight up not your art lmfao. But using bases or textures the program (like ibis) gives you access to and making it your own is fine (just check copyrights)
A similar example is the music app BandLab, with the free samples and loops, because they give explicit permission for using them as long as theyre changed in some way
