Working in the industry... this is marketing. The "experts" are experts on something that barely exists. The "pause" is a ruse by the current industry leaders to cement their foothold and prevent the boom of AI leading to them losing their advantage, espeically that advantage isn't as monumental as people think. It's machine learning, not AI. True sentient AI does not exist, and it won't for some time. This is all very advanced statistics in such a way that feels human. It doesn't matter what the chatbots themselves say, there is no constant flow of data through these chatbots. Every instance is different and will reflect the answers it thinks the user wants based on its input. It is designed to give you the response you ask for. In circumventing certain protocols of response lines you end up running into circular dependancies that can get very loopy very quickly. All in all, AI is not going to kill us any time soon. The theoretical processing power for a truly sentient machine would be monumental. There has to be several breakthroughs first. AI as it is now is marketing for a unique product of supplemental knowledge, not entities that think for themselves. Having tried to implement this technology in certain companies, it is not even ready to completely take over the duties of a call center worker. There is so much work to be done before true artificial intelligence exist. Some theorize it to be impossible. Personally, I see it within 50 years, and perhaps THEN this becomes a concern, but there's still some fundamental issues with the premise laid out in the story. I won't get into all of those here, but it provided you what you asked for but did not lay out the formulas for strategy or contingencies. It's exciting BECAUSE of the movies and we're allured by the idea of our own demise, but it isn't in the marketing companies use to sell this to VCs. They're not trying to sell it to YOU, they want those venture capital dollars. What VC wouldn't want a controlling share in technology that companies are calling so revolutionary we should PAUSE development (something patently ridiculous.) The "experts" jump on board because they don't actually have much expertise in the field of practical machine learning and they really only get attention when it's doom and gloom. Nobody is listening to an "AI expert" in any other context.
