Driverless trucks taking jobs is like the washing machine taking jobs. It's the type of work that impoverished and underrepresented groups are manipulated and threatened into doing. We live in a time where if you do not sell your time for money, you are put in severe danger of homelessness and starvation.
We should still treat the symptoms, like truckers losing jobs, but we must absolutely treat the source of the issue.
Automating menial tasks is good as long as you're in a governmental system that keeps its citizens safe, healthy, educated, and supported no matter what. Things like universal basic income, free education, open-source projects, and free healthcare are good steps towards that goal.
As a species, we can work towards a goal where humans aren't doing busywork, and instead do the things that humans are best at. However, That requires good choices, decisive legislation, and a shift in perspective for how we support each other.
