IF done right, this absolutely could be a benefit for truck drivers AND society. As a lifelong construction worker I very much get the fear of automation but I also embrace anything that makes my job easier on my body and faster at my work.
Imagine a truck driver who owns their rig. A company pays them to install this tech on their truck, then pays them to use it. the role would be they would drive lead, while 3 or more trucks follow them. On straight hwys, the driver would have less stress in allowing the truck to go on autopilot, they would get paid in weight hauled as well as distance driven vs an hourly wage or some kind of combination. Eventually, as the tech progresses, the driver could run 24 hours in being human mode part-time (heavy traffic, in the city, etc.) and auto mode on the boring straight highway areas. If people would stop resisting change and embrace it, we could actually get that thing liberals always claim to be about but always fight against.... progress! I mean people said the same things about the chainsaw when it first came out and how it would take jobs away from the logger... Can you imagine being a logger today using only a hand saw and an axe?
