Okay, hear me out. I am actually pro-AI in a lot of ways. I find the technology fascinating and the potential immeasurable. BUT, 'AI' 'art' isnt art and it shouldn't exist. 'AI' has potential for good and has led to many breakthroughs, but the theft models the public has access to aren't that. The promise of AI (which i mean. no one actually believed) was one of less work, more freedom for creativity and thought. Instead, we just have to work more while the 'AI' 'creates'. One area I would like to inquire with more skilled artists than I, would be in the area of independent game creation and placeholder assets. Like, sure, I could easily make a box with an X in it that says [placeholder] but is it unethical to use gen-'ai' to create these placeholders with a rough approximation of what I want the asset to look like until I can afford to hire an artist? I am not saying publishing any content with 'AI' generated assets in it, I mean during the development cycle. And any pre-release versions with ai generated content contain explicit disclaimers of 'AI' generated content? Like, sure that doesnt address the fact that the generation was sourced via theft, or the resource usage, or anything else but if I am never publishing it for profit, is it still an unethical use case?
