Large language models are over hyped by many people in Silicon Valley, but they're still incredible discoveries that no AI researcher would have thought possible 10 years ago. There's a reason that massive swathes of academia have swapped to working on these things. If you want a robot butler, the most effective robotics models are now incorporating the ideas of LLMs.
Karen kind of papers over the science of this stuff in her critique of OpenAI, which I think is unnecessary. These companies are getting a lot wrong, but they have achieved an incredible breakthrough that has great ramifications for society in the medium term. I don't think you need to pretend that isn't the case to criticise them.
