UC Davis has popularized the idea of 3 Revolutions in urban transportation: autonomy, electrification, and ridesharing. They make a similar point to the one in this video, that autonomous personally-owned vehicles could end up increasing traffic congestion. With personally-owned vehicles, most of the costs are fixed/sunk, so once you’ve bought the car there’s an incentive to use it as your main way of getting around. With taxis/ridesharing, all of the costs are variable (you pay per minute and per mile), so there’s more incentive to avoid long trips.
This includes multimodal trips - using a service like Waymo to get to the nearest transit station (and it’s fine if they don’t have parking), taking transit through a congested urban corridor, and then using a different rideshare vehicle for the “last mile” from the transit stop to the destination. I would guess that relatively few people in LA use Waymo like this, but many people in San Francisco do, because SF has a more mature transit system and traffic congestion is more concentrated in certain times and locations.
