Yeah so finally a politician that is actually talking about that, so I give alot of credit there. However, if robots and AI systems end up being more effective than their workforce, then they're more effective. Let's not kid ourselves that dropping an newly ineffective worker to 3 days or 4 days is anything more than a subsidy. Essentially as time goes on the 3-day a week worker will sit at a desk and play games. When the promise of AI is really delivered on it will over some time horizon decimate the classical working class and the vast majority of wage earners. AI corporations are racing to win the AI war because in many ways it is an existential crisis for their existence. If they do not move first and win, they will be eliminated. Anything that essentially puts the breaks on the extreme innovation (like having lay people sit about and decide what AI systems get used, blah blah) in these corporations will, ultimately, be handing the championship ring to an entity that most assuredly has even less interest in the wellbeing of the American populous. That said, there is no time for half measures. Historically I wasn't a fan of things like Universal Basic Income, but we really need to be talking about some kind of Universal Basic Income along with WHAT ARE PEOPLE GOING TO DO when they no longer have a job to go to?? We're already seeing some of the impacts here. People go to school and spend 200K for a degree and they can't get work afterwards - NOW WHAT ? It is a time for extreme ideas and UBI is just the tip of the iceberg. A robot tax may be a good idea - but what defines a robot ? Every AI agent is essentially a robot. I don't know what the right answer is but if we're to have any prayer our politicians better start jumping up and down and, unfortunately for all of us, one of the more liberally minded about this is Bernie Sanders who, I fear, is far too conservative in his thinking about this very issue.
