Aside from some minor overstatements, there is one thing at the end which strikes me as an unsupported assertion: "nobody asked for it anyway."
There are plenty of people who, for reasons of age or disability find it difficult to drive safely, or in some cases, drive at all. These people need access to transportation to remain independent. Uber, Lyft, and others are generally too expensive to be used by these people on a regular basis. But a modest automobile with self-driving whether in rideshare form or as a personal vehicle would be extremely helpful.
I am not one of those people at present but I can well imagine the 10 years from now I will be. So yes, some of us are asking for autonomous vehicles.
