Let them train their models on content with the original artists' permission, *maybe* also public-domain content (I can see arguments in both directions there). I have to take a bit of exception with your "pencils and computer paper are cheap" argument, because it ignores the value/cost of the many hours of practice that are needed to produce high-quality artwork, and ignoring the value of the artist's hard work and experience is kinda contrary to your overall position. Also, there's something to be said for the presence or absence of raw talent.
AI art has its uses, mostly in the realm of "I need/want a bit of visual art, but I lack the funds to commission it and the skills to create it myself." It's niche, and I'd say still predicated on ethically-sourced training data.
