This Economist correspondent's analysis is very flawed for several reasons: The statistic he cited regarding jobs in the first half are backwards looking. It was gathered at a time when Gen AI still contained many context understanding issues, hallucinations and prompt length limits. Since late last year, many of these issues have been overcome and with the Pro or Extended Thinking versions of most Gen AI, much of those problems have gone away. Secondly, he cited the Anthropic study that only 75% of current jobs can be automated by AI, concluding that jobs will just shift in profile instead of disappearing. This is flawed logic. Employers will just hire 1 person instead of 4 to do the same job. So many jobs will disappear unless the global economy expands concurrently by 3x! I've been a big fan of The Economist for decades, but I have to say, the opinions they put out in this video lacks robust logic and proper research. Anyone who has attempted to replicate research-based, analytical, intellectual or critical thinking tasks using the latest AI would agree with what most experts are saying: Yes, there will be massive replacement of cognitive functions in jobs by AI! I speak both as someone doing the tasks myself daily and also thinking ahead as an employer of talent and resource allocation. Lastly, once you've gone way past mid-life like myself, you would realize the odds of an entire generation not being able to reskill and adapt to the dawn of a new era is huge, and historically true. From a macro bird's eye (economist of historian's) view, of course it is easy to say that civilization and society will adapt and thrive on the new tech eventually. But if you are caught in the shift, that's of little comfort to hear. 'Ageism' in finding jobs is the biggest discrimination no one talks about despite this so called diverse and woke society that we now live in. Just ask anyone above 45 years of age who has lost their job.
We need better forward looking analysis and more nuanced conversations about this tsunami of change hitting mankind!
