"in a true emergency it’s a human, thousands of miles away, who is expected to save you" ... This is incorrect. Waymo's remote operators can't intervene in safety critical situations. They can only help with suggestions. The remote controlled car is also an exaggeration. Waymo cars can be driven remotely up to 2 mph and this feature has never been used so far. If a hacker breaks into the system, they won't be able to drive faster than 2 mph. Remote operator's suggestions aren't commands, the vehicle has it's own reasoning and won't hit something only because the remote operator said so.
