At the beginning of new tech, 'barely useful' is gladly accepted. See for example:
- the MS DOS-based personal computer, compared to today's Apple GUI-based computer
- the early internet web pages to today's websites and smartphone apps
Those early days bore some really, really awful, useless stuff, but it was all new and had some use.
In the early days, 'useful in some way' is the main, and ONLY, requirement.
I was learning about and training neural nets at ICSI in Berkeley while an undergrad in the EECS program at UC Berkeley. it took a LONG time for the first, consumer-usable AI to appear after my ICSI work. A LONG, long time.
It's likely going to take much longer to create AGI than Dario Amodei's desire to rush Enthropic's IPO this year, to lock down his wealth.
