I think that AI generation has its place in art, but it does not extend beyond generating references. I will sometimes use an image generator to create a few general mock-ups of an idea that I have for a painting or drawing just so that I don't need to look up images of the individual elements to reference as I construct the piece. But then I still go on to paint or draw the thing I wanted to make using a couple of the generated images - with all of the elements incorporated - as the references. Still requires the artist to know how to create a physical rendition of the art they are digitally generating via the prompt and, at least in my case, I don't keep refreshing until I find the perfect version of what I envisioned and then make a 1:1 copy of a single reference image.
