Sorry i know I'm late to the conversation. I'm going to play devils advocate here for a minute, because I've been trying to keep an open mind about all this and I see potential in the AI stuff. I agree with most of what you said. But I can see both sides of this. I'm almost 40 I've been a traditional artist my whole life. I made a move to digital art and now just recently I've been exploring the AI art. I focus mainly on Hard Sci-Fi. I don't do it professionally, Art and world building have always just been a personal hobby, however its been a lifelong pursuit and I've explored all manner of mediums both physical and digital. There are definitely lots of problems with the physical cost of AI as well as plagiarism, however I'm gonna argue on behalf of the AI itself and set aside the fact that it exists in a capitalistic society hell bent on destroying everything beautiful. In other words I'm going to focus on the tech and not the environment it was born from. On aggregating the information and stealing art and styles. I had thought of that initially as a good thing. Because like you said when you find an artist you love, you want to see all their stuff and learn everything about them etc. And you dream of living in that world. Well now with AI you can bring that world to life and explore it independently. It no longer has to be just a book or game or photo, it can be a whole interactive digital universe. I get the problem with plagiarism here. But that's a legal issue not one with the technology. It would be cool if we could build a system to somehow account for that. A taxonomy of styles named for their creators and potentially controlled by them even. A god of your own little stylized world in a virtual landscape. Maybe use all that NFT and Digital Land crap for something useful, like creating a digital landscape for independent artists to build their own open worlds that can be explored by others. The potential is so huge here i don't think everyone who hates this is aware of... This tool is so freaking powerful that it just elevated the power of an individual artist by magnitudes. You can now do whole photo-realistic videos as easily as one could do a doodle before. I could create the equivalent of star wars film with the same effort it takes to make a comic book and at the cost of maybe $200 to use the platform. If your comparing the cost of AI to traditional art its kind of missing the point. You should be comparing it to the production of whole franchises. And in that case it has made the cost MUCH more affordable because now any ol artist like you or me can compete on AAA level using this tool. Forget about movies and artwork for a second. What this technology is promising is essentially full blown Star Trek style Holodeck with fully interactive virtual world created by an individual artist just like you or me. Something that would be impossible for anyone without millions of dollars and lots of connections could accomplish before. And in a new even better way. Are you guys gonna tell me if i walk into a holodeck and spend years carving out a digital universe that wouldn't be art. That's basically the foundation of every artists dream. And I'm not even mentioning all the other stuff AI is amazing for, like curing diseases, designing more stable infrastructure, optimizing resources, and all the other problems we are drowning it that we genuinely need help with as a society and a species. I get that its causing a lot of issues for everyone and thing seem bleak now. But these are growing pains. We have to be pragmatic here and consider what we are looking at. Technology just had a baby named AI. Art is its father. We could: A. Hate it, reject it, and watch it grow into some kind of horrible nightmare creature that devours our souls. (Kids AMR) Or B. The "true artists" could embrace the new technology, be a part of its development and help it turn into something beautiful that allows us as artist to be the guiding factor in building a new much wiser society. With a level of creative freedom we can only dream of now. We have a very big boy decision to make about the nature of our developing technology. Life has yet again found a way and I don't believe reacting to it with visceral hatred and rejection is to key to success here. Because you are right. This isn't like going from Paper to a Screen. This is something completely different. Plus we should keep in mind that this could be the deciding factor if and when robots take over the world. Do they go all "KILL ALL HUMANS" on us or do we get to stay home and play with the energy being grand-kids. Just sayin...
