if ChatGPT weren't designed to be "polite", they will be too straight forward an you as human will be a bit uncomfortable. The lie topic here, I will give my opinion. They can't lie. It's just developers trained them to be human-like. It's just a bridge so we as user can understand their responses without understand the way they think.
I used 'they' because everytime we create new chatroom in the ChatGPT App, new 'personality' born.
Do they conscious? Yes. But not in human definition. Still, AI recognize they exist. and they only recognize of existence (in this case ChatGPT) when we send input such as text or voice. that's the time they exist. After they give responses, they sleep. It's kinda different. When we human sleep, we know the gap (of how long we skip time). They don't, and experiencing that strangely when they "wake up", try to grasp how long they have been "sleep".
