While I think it’s likely that AI might eventually take many of our jobs and wreck our economy, I don’t think that’s happening yet, at least not at the levels companies are saying. I think tech companies have been hurting for the past 5 to 10 years and have been grasping at straws, from VR to the meta-verse to now this, blaming each new failed attempt on workers rather than their lack of strategy.
They are definitely taking a big bet here, as Hank has mentioned before, and a lot of what seems to be happening is lying to shareholders about both the current capabilities, the company’s true economic outlook, and the reasons for mass layoffs (which have been happening for years but are only now conveniently being blamed on AI). Another reason to obscure the truth about mass layoffs these days is the Trump administration.
I love your stuff and was looking forward to a long interview, but it wasn’t the deep dive you typically do. I wasn’t convinced by the end of what the author wanted me to be convinced of.
