The funniest, easy example of an AI lying is Anthropic's recent study showing what happens under the hood. They asked "What is 36 + 59?", the model activated nodes for numbers around 36, numbers exactly 36, and numbers ending in 6. Activated the same nodes for numbers around 59, numbers exactly 59, and numbers ending in 9. It mushes that together, and outputs the answer. But if you ask the same AI "How did you find that answer?" It will say "I added the singles, carried to the 10s place, and summed it." The AI fuzzily produced an answer, and then lied about how it found the answer.
