I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe he was already on the cusp of a psychotic break before the bromide. Fixating onto chloride and going so far as to put bromide in his food seems extreme to do for anyone in their right mind. I think that AI simply fed the delusion. He ignored his initial symptoms because he was already delusional and paranoid.
That is just my guess though.
