To be honest, I keep struggling with the question "what is self-aware, intelligent, ...". I mean a lot of the "thinking mechanics" of humans is also association. If you have to conjugate a verb, most people just take what they have read most of the time for "he, you, they". They don't really conjugate the verb, they use association. The process of real thinking is also exceptionally energy demanding and slow. These chatbots use to some extent the same mechanism: they associate "Paris" with "France", and thus can generate a lot of text, to some extent what humans would do if they have to write a paper about something they are unfamiliar with: you look up some text, don't understand it really, and you start writing the words that occured most often into these works and things that are often mentioned together are put in the paper close to each other.
