I honestly want her to be right. But if we're pragmatic, it doesn't look good for the future. Poisoned art definitely does work for now (I'm glad it does). The problem is that AI develops fast. Look how far we came over the past 5, or even 2 years so far. In a couple years, it won't work anymore. Soon, you'll need an AI of your own to make an image unreadable to other AI, and that solution will also only be temporary until they figure out how to bypass anything done to an image.
It's is profitable. The use cases provided in this video are not great uses of AI (like she says, so I'm agreeing), but it will be profitable for things like advertising. Look at Walmart. For so long, they used clothing models that hid the model's faces, so they wouldn't need to pay them as much. AI lets them make fake people to use as models for alot less money. The same applies to assets in a video game. Alot of them are very simple. "Create a texture for this case of 12 gauge shotgun shells, make it look old and warn".
I really hate to say it, but this mindset is wishful thinking (assuming it's that AI won't at least mostly take over). AI generation as of now is the worst it'll ever be, and it'll be alot less bad a year from now. And so on. Do I wish AI wouldn't take the place of, and the jobs of artists? Yes. But I also wish being a genuine craftsman or artisan was more prominent, but mass-production has crippled alot of career paths in those fields. Saddlemakers said the Car would never catch on. And they had a point for a long time, because cars were rickety and pretty bad for a long time. And here we are.
Art as a career will be harder to get into in the future. But what I will say is her point at 4:29 is her best point and not one that can be argued. There is inherently something more behind User created art over AI art. Looking at something my fellow humans created themselves does feel better to me than looking at something a Clanker shits out. 100%. That's how I feel. But my pragmatic side understands that money always wins, and people will prefer to throw prompts at a computer rather than hiring an Artist to save money.
This does mean User Art will continue to exist as a hobby or pastime, and a career in a limited fashion. It'll never fully fade, no mater how good AI gets. It's gonna be an 80-90% wash, but never 100%. It's alot like blacksmithing in the modern day. I can go buy a mass-produced hunting knife, or buy a custom made hunting knife from a blacksmith. Holding a piece of fine-crafted carbon steel in my hands that another human forged themselves has a sentimentality to it that I like. But that's me, alot of people don't care. But there are still those who do still care, and those who do still forge. Art will be the same.
