I studied AI back in 1989 when computer development was the main focus to improve the ability of engineers to design and build manufacturing processes to build products like computers and cars. Robotics and process planning were key elements of the vision we had, for logistics and production, that would allow costs to fall and quality to increase. Society in the West is slowly moving toward those goals while China seems to have reached them. Computers taking over decision making to the detriment of people is not a likely outcome unless it is programmed to be the outcome. Fear not earthlings, the robots are not taking over the world.
