I understand why a lot of artists, designers, and creatives are upset about AI art. I really do. But after reading and watching a lot of these critiques, I still haven’t heard a fully convincing argument — at least not one that holds up legally or philosophically. It feels like most of the conversation is being driven by emotion (understandably), but not always by clarity.
Here are a few thoughts:
1. AI art isn’t inherently theft or plagiarism — though it can be.
If someone claims it is, they’d need to prove that laws were broken. We already have legal frameworks for things like fair use, transformation, and parody. Unless an AI image is a direct copy or falsely claims to be another artist, AI art likely falls under transformative use. Tools like Photoshop and cameras also made copying easier — but we didn’t ban the tool. We punished misuse. AI should be treated the same.
Also, a lot of people use the word "theft" incorrectly here. Legally, theft is about taking someone's property to deprive them of it. That’s not happening in most AI cases. What they're usually describing is closer to plagiarism, which is already protected against.
2. The idea that AI art lacks intentionality doesn’t really hold up.
Prompting takes imagination and iteration. Just like any other creative tool, you don’t always get what you want on the first try. The process can be intentional — it’s just a different kind of interaction with the medium.
3. There’s a deeper assumption that “real art” must come directly from human hands.
If I imagine something, I can either draw it myself or describe it to an AI. Either way, the goal is the same: to bring an idea into existence. Both routes have their limitations. What matters is that something new was made — something that didn’t exist before. To dismiss AI art outright feels more like philosophical gatekeeping than an actual critique of creativity.
4. Firefly is clearly a transformative piece of work influenced by Star Wars. You’re actually making the argument AI artist are making. Even if I prompt AI to make Star Wars, unless the images are direct copies or taking a copyright/trademark (logos, possibly certain characters) then what’s the problem? Look at Etsy or Redbubble — filled with fan merch and art. If we accept that kind of transformative work, why single out AI? If it’s wrong, then let’s be consistent.
5. The argument that people are not able to discover new artists or types of art because of AI is a false dilemma and are appeals to ignorance and tradition. How many people heard about Studio Ghibli for the first time until last week when it trended like it did? I never even had a concept of making something with a 50s fantasy aesthetic, but through AI we do now. How many people might that influence and help them find their own style and form of creative expression? And how many styles of art and artist have been forgotten through history, and no one bats an eye?
6. The one fair point I’ve heard is that AI Art is not always good for references, but neither are non-AI pieces of art. There’s plenty of non-AI art throughout history with bad anatomy or perspective. Even the best artists go back and fix their work. And even with the mistakes made in AI Art, wouldn’t they be obvious enough to an observant person to correct those mistakes? What if I’m trying to find a reference to something I can’t find? If I can’t find a reference, AI can at least get me close.
7. That brings us to a philosophical question: What’s objective vs subjective in art?
Is beauty just in the eye of the beholder? I’d argue beauty reflects something real — objective truth. Art rearranges what’s real into something new. The method may vary (subjective), but the outcome (the existence of the art) is real and objective. And if we’re critiquing AI for being “inconsistent” or “random,” where’s that same energy for abstract art, postmodernism, or impressionism? Let’s at least be consistent in our standards.
8. AI Art is accessible in that someone who doesn’t have artistic skills, but perhaps has the eye or mind for it can make their ideas come to life. I am baffled by why people are not seeing this as an opportunity for creative expression. That’s what I mean by democratizing art.
9. Going back to the objective question – I am actually in agreement with the ugliness and corporate feel of a lot of AI art and how it is used in marketing. I was even repulsed by its use on boxes for products like toys when I walked past the aisle in Walmart. If a product doesn’t sell because of the marketing, then responsible corporations will correct course. However, the issue is again not the AI’s fault, it is the corporation or marketing team that is at fault. I am making the argument that AI can be used thoughtfully in marketing, film, art, writing, etc. just like anything else in real life. Are artists using their mediums responsibly? Are graphic designers creating anything worthy of praise? This is once again another false dilemma.
10. “AI will take jobs from artists” — yes, probably.
But that’s part of the cultural and economic evolution of every field. This has happened to countless professions throughout history. Artists, like anyone else, have to adapt. Are you pushing your craft? Are you finding your niche? Are you learning new tools? You’re not owed a job just because you exist. If anything, these pressures can push artists to grow — and survival has always been fuel for creativity.
11. How is Ghiblifying memes ghoulish and horrible? That day brought people joy. It introduced Studio Ghibli to a whole new generation. Most people weren’t mocking it — they were celebrating it. If anything, SG should lean into that moment and use it to build community, revenue, and new fans.
12. In the end, AI is just another tool.
No different from a pencil, camera, hammer, or computer. The question isn’t “is the tool evil?” — it’s “how are people using it?” I’m honestly baffled at how many people are rejecting AI wholesale. The problem isn’t the tool — it’s the user. Let’s have smarter conversations about this.
