So...I need to defend ONE, TINY thing about the Nanowrimo statement. The sentence "There is a wealth of reasons why individuals can't 'see' the issues in their writing without help" is not actually ableist. I think the grammar is wrong, but it's just making a well-known, universally true statement about writing. NO ONE, however abled or not, can "see" the issues in their writing without help. This is why critique groups, beta readers, editors...the entire massive list of writing support roles exist. Now, Nanowrimo did say that poor people, POCs, and disabled people don't have friends. And they also are completely inapable of swapping critiques with people who may not be their actual friends, also, apparently. They did say that disagreeing with the use of generative AI in order to chatGPT an entire novel for their writing "competition" makes you a racist, ableist bigot, and they said that obviously chatGPTing an entire novel for their writing competition is really the same thing as using an advanced spell checker. Everyone disagreeing with AI is, OF COURSE, just a bunch of reactionary psychos. They said a lot of absurdly stupid things... But that one sentence is not referring to disabled people. It's referring to the fact that, actually, EVERYONE--from best-selling authors to newbies to literary geniuses to people writing english as a second language--needs a second set of eyes on their work. Why they think those people don't have friends or can't join writing groups and have to bribe people to look at their work is the problem.
