My mother was shocked to learn that she was my inspiration to practice my artistic skills. When I was very little I watched my mom doodle roses while talking on the telephone and I wanted to draw pictures as beautiful as she could. I then learned that no one had ever told her a drawing she did was good. While my parents encouraged me in my art and even still have all the pictures I scribbled for them (my dad keeps one I drew of him when I was 4 on his mirror, I am now 35) her mother never saw the point in art and would say “oh how nice” then immediately throw them out instead of putting them on the fridge. So she never saw her own art as anything more than something mindless to pass the time in the margins of pages or coloring books.
After hearing that I encouraged her to try any art she wanted. We went out and bought her some watercolor supplies and now she has a few pictures of her own up on the walls.
I don’t see talent as being able to make something good. That’s skill, and can be innate or practiced. Talent is the urge to do something a lot and hone or develop those skills. And the great thing about art is if you can’t make it like everyone else then find a way to make it like you.
AI art is like ice cube molds. They may be cute or pretty but unless you made the molds yourself by first sculpting the shapes you didn’t actually make the product nor is it impressive. (Or maybe it’s more like a TV dinner: anyone can press a few buttons, but your only contribution was knowing when to tell the machine it was done.)
