I don’t understand the big deal about AI being trained on copyrighted material. All musicians are. The way AI works is much like a human. It incorporates stuff it’s been trained on and comes up with something original from prompting. You exit the AI and clear the context, ask the exact same prompt, you get a different result every time. It’s copying as much as anyone writing a new I IV V song. AI is a tool. Much like a camera, whoever presses the button owns the copyright of the picture. The person making the prompt for the AI should be able to own the copyright the result. AI is a tool that will let those without the use of their hands, or any other impediment to making music, able to participate in the act of creation. Just because the instrument is new doesn’t mean it doesn’t count. If that were true, we’d only have drummers or singers, though as instruments, may have developed concurrently.
