Personally I don't believe that AI will wipe out the working class, but it will change its form considerably.
But if it were going to, wouldn't that be a very unwise thing for companies to do? When the Strowger Switch hit the market, the number of switchboard operators dropped by 90% in 30 years. Hundreds of thousands of people suddenly out of work. Most of them went on to find work elsewhere of course, but imagine if there was no work elsewhere. Imagine if AI made 90% of the workforce obsolete in 30 years today. That's hundreds of millions of people out of work, jobless. The entire economy would collapse. Society as we know it would collapse.
The reason I say this would be unwise for companies to do is because consumers need to work to afford their goods and services. If everyone is broke, who's going to buy and consume their slop? No, I don't believe AI will wipe out the working class, but it will change its form into something unrecognizable by today's standards. Society will transform. I don't think that transformation will be kind to those who caused it.
