Animals are not persons, but many people recognize that animals should have the right to live without torture, to basic autonomy over their lives, etc. "Robot rights" are in the same way, although the concept relies on the theory that sufficiently advanced robots (which we haven't developed yet) will have sentience similar to biological sentience.
