I don't like how their framing it that chatgpt 'encouraged' anything, it's just writing words based on what YOU wrote. The fact that this kid was suicidal and their parent's either didn't notice or ignored it should be cause to investigate them. When people are suicidal you know, you can see it in their behavior and how they talk about things. You are not boomers, you don't have an excuse for not noticing your kid was having problems.
As someone else said earlier in the comments, chatgpt is designed to give your esponses that you like, because like a puppy it just want's to make you happy and interacting. Or at least give you the illusion of that, since it's just a program and not a sentient being.
