One limitation we have when we talk about this as a new empire is that we assume it only threatens democracy. It will also erode the concept of the nation state. A better model is global corporations in which individuals have dependent relationships akin to a sort of vassal and feudal lord. ‘Citizens’ will depend on whatever entity provides them income or sustenance.
