I'm a musician. I'm not a great one, but I have been writing music for about 40 years now. A few of my songs can stand on their own, but when I plug my human compositions into AI, they turn into something better than me and better than the AI alone. I think it's a mistake to just crush that. Sure, I can use AI to create a song with a prompt. But I don't. I write my music in Reaper. I record multitracks. I might even sing it, and then I have AI do it better. The parts I don't like that come out of AI, I add more human tracks to. Since my wife can sing very well, I might replace the music with largely AI but leave her voice there. The bottom line is that it's work. It takes many months of work for me to complete an album. It's not just a prompt, and people assume when they find out that I used AI, I did nothing. But consider a boring church pianist taking their composition to a producer to come out with a polished song. I have no problem with the producer getting credit for polishing up my work. But almost everyone uses a producer. The talent usually comes from a machine of people. It is a well-oiled machine that just spits out music the same way Suno does. Except that when a singer who can't play and can't compose goes to a famous producer and comes out with a hit album, the producer's name on their album isn't a Scarlet Letter. Why should AI be? I can't afford a band most of the time, and the artists that I do know are very picky about when they want to show up and practice. AI is great for people like me who are not in a band, who are aging, and who have talent they want to get out there. And when I say I have talent, I don't mean that I have prompt talent. I mean that I have musical talent. It's just that my producer is not a person.
