After seeing the exterior view, I don't think I could have reacted any better than the car. Doesn't it have an infrared sensor, too? According to a description of the Uber ATG (on TechRadar), its lidar system sends out "infrared laser pulses," which may NOT have been enough to detect a person with a reflective object like the bicycle she was holding. Or could it be that the non-infrared sensors took precedence over the infrared one? I presume the system made a scan of the area (with false negative) where the woman was at, and jumped to the next section to scan. Note that there is no hint of slowing down in the video. I'm sad over the news, indeed, and self-driving cars need to be proven with a perfect record -- one life is too many, although I do understand that there are many more "success" incidents that don't make the news.
