ChatGPT predicts the next word in a sentence, that's it. It doesn't understand what it's writing, it doesn't understand what you asked it, it just took in the words and then calculated what word should be next. It leverages the fact it's been trained on billions of examples of real human writing to know that when you ask it why colour the sky is, next word should be "blue", and that's literally how everything it does works.
That is not in any way how humans write or speak, we aren't predicting the next word in a sentence when we're asked a question, we are producing a sentence based upon our actual knowledge and experience. We understand the rules of grammar and syntax, we understand the world we inhabit. Its why AI responses are so easy to spot when you're talking to them, they respond with answers that no actual human would give because they don't understand what they're saying.
