The proposition that deepfake AI videos are so persuasive as to undermine the very pillars of democracy seems dubious. An apt comparison could be whether the proficiency of Adobe Photoshop ever presented a similar threat. A colleague humorously asked in a recent conversation: "How do I know this is really you not AI ruse?" Clearly, awareness of this issue is increasingly seeping into popular discourse. The general public is typically not as naive as some influential groups may assume.
Tangentially yet significantly, why should the production of an unattributed video be considered a crime, deserving harsh penalties, regardless of the actual harm it might inflict, even when it results in none? This idea seems starkly irrational. Any forthcoming regulations addressing this problem should logically begin with those spreading widespread disinformation: Iraq's WMDs, Safe and Effective, You Won't Get Covid, Russian Collusion, Hunter Laptop etc.
Given that the media has been deceiving the public and undermining democratic processes for years, why should this new technological challenge be treated any differently? Essentially, this calls for legal action against deceit and misrepresentation. Indeed, why not follow this thought to its logical endpoint?
