The US government is all in on A.I., and willing to completely disregard ordinary people and their fate too. And the ethical A.I. you talk about at the end? It's not possible. At least if we want those generative, all-purpose chatbots that the industry obsesses over. (when the real good, potentially ethical use of A.I. really is smaller A.I.s that are specialized on a specific task and dataset, like the ones used to study protein folding).
As much as it saddens me to see my species being so greedy and self-destructive once again, I don't believe governments will do any regulations or change until they are forced to do so by an economic collapse. AKA when it's already too late to prevent what would have been a very avoidable catastrophe.
