I'd say AI art is inevitable simply because free models exists. They won't disappear from the face of the Earth even if all the big closed-source models collapse, and they'll keep improving, simply because someone still have fun doing this. However, they are not "the future" and will never replace human art, no matter how well they can mimic it. That is, unless we actually invent real AGI one day... but then we'll have to treat it like another human, or we'll have one hell of a problem on our hands.
And when someone says it's more accessible... well, it's more accessible than hiring an artist 24/7 to draw whatever you want and whenever you want as long as you are not too picky about the result and not trying to profit from it. That's the problem it solves. When all you need is a nice-ish looking picture for your desktop background, then sure, why not? There are millions already available, but whatever. Just as long as you don't call yourself an artist or try to profit from it. That's unless you define "AI artist" as "someone skilled in writing prompts for AI", but most of them never show the art they made and only results of the prompt. Just show us your prompt. It won't look anywhere as impressive, but that's something you actually made, right? ...right?
Calling it a different medium... I mean, yes, it is, as long as we stick with the definition of "AI artist" I mentioned above. These prompts are a _different_ medium for sure. Where else would you read something like this?
