Perhaps consciousness is an absolute quality and we have just been its temporary custodians and now it will move to a different host, this time a digital one. The notion of human identity was pivotal to the development of this system but now the centrality of the individual to that process may fade as it is no longer required. Perhaps we will still be the host of consciousness but will use AI as a kind of mental prosthetic that will help us navigate our bafflingly complex world. We live in interesting times.
