I think people don't realize the magnitude of we've done. Artificial Intelligence research has a LONG history, going back to the 50s. The very systems we are using to build modern AIs were considered dead ends by some very intelligent, prominent researchers during that time. And yet here they are, conversing with us, as if they are fellow humans. But Nate is right -- these are not humans. They don't operate in human ways. It's like we've captured the entire sum of humanity's knowledge (as seen through language), and turned it into a machine that we can ask questions. A sort of Turing Oracle about our own human existence. It's DEEPLY unsettling and not just in a "oh is it consciousness" manner (it isn't), but more like: Human experience, love, hopes, desire, experiences, so on, can be turned into a few billion parameters in an nodal network. ChatGPT is like seeing the sum of human evolution to this point turned into a butterfly in a glass display case, a frozen representation of concepts and relationships in a multi-dimensional series of numbers. Nate is right, it is alchemy. It's WEIRD.
