I'm studying urban planning, and lemme tell ya there is a CRAZY amount of investment into the idea of AVs as a microtransit supplement/alternative. Hell, I'm writing my final paper for my degree on rural transit and part of my case study analysis is the idea of AVs as a solution. Now, I don't think its going to work long term truthfully, the one case study I have for AVs stopped operating years ago (they're usually just 1-year pilot projects), but with the weekly headlines I read from Austin and their Waymo problem, there's no shot it ever pans out. Didn't know Waymo had to map out a city block by block, and if thats the case I actually think technically it might be easier in a small town, but economically the money is not there. Rural transit is the most expensive transit you can provide, and a Google-funded company isn't gonna do something for the sake of public good. Still, thought it was interesting to mention that a significant amount of transportation planners buy into the idea.
