Now you may hate me for this, but hear me out: I don't think that AI models learning from people's art is any worse from another person learning from it in a moral sense. My issue with AI art starts right at the premise though. AI replacing human artists. Now some may say "People were also mad about steam engines taking their jobs, and look at how it changed manufacturing." but here's the thing: art for most is a hobby, and for a hobby to be your job is a wonderful thing, but i doubt many people particularly enjoy repeated boring menial labour. People were mad about machines taking manufacturing jobs from them because they want to make money, but artists are mad about machines taking manufacturing jobs from them because they want to make art. I think that makes a huge difference. It's wrong because it optimizes profits, instead of optimizing human fulfillment. Now, there can be positive uses to it, I think AI models have a great place in menial intellectual tasks if their accuracy can be further inproved, and hell, even image generation can be positive. A few months back me and my friends played this amazing visual novel which contained some AI art for the backgrounds and side characters to lighten the developers workload. But as any tool AI is only as good as its use, and as any tool most people seem interested in using it in questionable or downright immoral ways.
