I agree with the central claim that this is false advertising. I agree that the technology is relatively unsafe to trust in an unsupervised way, but it does actually say all that before you can use it, just to be fair. We are kind of getting caught up in the name of a thing, like it communicates everything you should possibly need to know about that thing. Tesla drivers on the whole, are more educated than the typical driver, and while there are plenty of videos of idiots in Teslas out there, it's stupidity, not ignorance. Everyone one of these deaths is absolutely tragic and I don't want to take anything away from that. I truly feel for those lost through growing pains of technologies. However, I do want to point out that air travel only became as safe as it did because humanity learned from tragedy over and over, and worked together to fix it, and make it safer for all of us. This too is still happening now for computer vision. There are engineers working daily at Nvidia and Tesla to improve the safety of these systems, and these cars are capturing more and more data than ever before about what happened and why. I'm not drinking any kool-aid here, I'm just playing a trolley thought experiment. Think of the people killed daily from drunk driving and sleepy/inattentive drivers. The death counts here when set against the backdrop of auto accidents in general pale in comparison. It's an uncomfortable truth we need to wrestle with as a society. The market leader "Waymo" is absolutely doing tragically horrible at this, so I think we can at least stop dragging Tesla like Lidar was the only possible way.
