Besides destroying us, there are also other alternatives. Trying to upgrade us, for instance, with upgrade being whatever the AI thinks is an upgrade.
Or it could try to take care of us, with that being up to what it thinks is best. Humans like ice cream, right? Have some ice cream.
And also another scary thought. What if it comes up with something that would lead to something wonderful, and then it is stopped because a few people want to be in control? What if AI being in control is the only way we can save ourselves?
