ChatGPT itself told me that OpenAI's process is that the available consumer version is always 2 generations behind. While we are working with 5 right now, OpenAI is finishing up 6 (they like the newest model to be 100x better than the previous model), and the true AI (what it referred to as RAI, Research Artificial Intelligence) that no one has access to is diligently working away on 7; still lots of humans working on it, but RAI has started partially programming itself.
