You may have found that statistically almost impossible moment where your provider has an outage, but I believe the Waymo taxis should also have a mobile Star Link based fallback system, which should kick in if the terrestrial data link drops out. I doubt they would save money and not have a backup data link that operates with a very different technology and/or frequency band and provider. I can not believe they would be utterly naive. I personally also think autonomous driving should also be redundant and use lidar as well as radar on top of multi cam visual, which is one of the reasons I lost respect for Tesla, which at some point saved money on extra radar and ultrasonic sensors, just did without them and tried to do it all visual, when it is always the safer bet to have multiple layers of measurement. The car accident with the cat is painful, but I currently I can't think of a mechanism that will not be abused by idiots who love to screw with automatisms. If you define a hand gesture to stop the car immediately for a moment, we all know what will happen with idiots on the sidewalks. They will not only place traffic cones on the hood, they will use that all the time they see a Waymo. The only way would be to install a 360° sensor underneath the car, but with a self cleaning mechanism, else it will be useless. But that could insure the car is not going anywhere as long as something is moving underneath the car. Then this will trigger idiots to roll and empty bottle underneath the car in order to block it for a while. Its a bit like the Internet, it is brilliant and is being abused by ruthless a$$holes, and I am not even talking about the digusting President, who abuses literally everything. Bottom line, Waymo is on the right track but needs to improve, Tesla is trying it the cheap way, which is systemically wrong, though I have seen situations with the latest FSD here through the busiest part of Munich at a busy time and it was quite impressive. It drove as good as good and careful human drivers would. But still you have to minimize the luck factor and use more sensors and heavy duty AI that doesn't require an online library connection. This Summer I may also do some tests with my level 2 car and see if it wrongly detects moving carboard or only material that reflect radar radio waves, like human bodies or aluminum foil does. A Teslsa is incapable to knowing the difference but South Koreans cars all have radar and should be able to detect of flesh or cardboard or foam if in front of the car. So please don't test unless your dummy reacts to radio waves like human body does that consists of around 65% water. Wrapping it in aluminum foil should make all the difference to any car that has not been designed by a ruthless thrifty billionaire, coincidentally the richest man on the planet - how ironic is that. So please don't buy a Tesla as long as Nazi-Salute-Elon is involved in the decision making, the same guy who is trying to push our local "almost" Nazi party here in Germany and wants this ruthless corrupt lying ultra right wing party to kill every progress, logic and basic humanity, just like the Republicans in the US.
