On the one hand if you just want a character for a quick roleplay with a friend I understand using AI because it’s either using AI or stealing art and rebranding it as your oc (something artists notoriously did not like) most don’t have the money or art skills to just draw up their oc when they feel like. It’s easy to say “just learn how to draw” but there are things that can get in the way of that when all you want to do is write a story with your friend. However, I’m in the camp that AI is fine for personal use like roleplays, ideas, and references, it shouldn’t be used in commercial spaces and just like product labels tell us if something is copyrighted they should be required to say in a caption “this was images / material uses AI” and include what the AI was used for. I think it’s a fair trade. AI can’t be copyrighted so if you say use AI for an adoptable congratulations you just provided a wannabe VTuber a free concept art for a model so they can get a commission without having to steal someone else’s model idea for a reference. Plus there are cases where it’s hard to find art in the style you need. I tried finding an artist he worked with the Ouran high school art style majority didn’t respond at all or were full. The one who did spent 6 months with radio silence after the commission and when I got my piece back it was completely wrong because they didn’t draw my character they just took the reference image into their art style and made me pay $60 for it when I only make $813 a month. So I entirely understand the side of the isle who simply can’t afford to get screwed like I did.
