The thing I've always asked myself is this: there is no reason for any "intelligent" thing to "think" like humans. Every concept we have, even the concept of life and intelligence are all made-up by our evolution. Aliens, or AI, might have just completely different ideas, have a way of "thinking" that is just completely separate from our own. As such, there is no way to understand each other or maybe even acknowledge the other's existence.
