"AI can only know what exists on the Internet." Triggered by this, am I. 1. It conflates training data with operational capacity. LLMs outputs aren't database lookups. They are generalizations across abstract patterns that may infer, combine, or synthesize beyond the internet's body's substring used in aggregating node weights for training purposes. 2. the verb to Know is being misused. He is treating the knowledge as a static container of facts, a correspondence theory of truth. LLMs only approximate understanding, to fabricate knowledge-use, probabilistically statistic enough to be practically useful or novel. What he said is both not entirely false, but oversimplifies a gatekeeping cop-out that ignores generative modeling and inference to actual use. It is a rehash of 'AI just mynah birds of the Internet' tired trope. Overly simplistic to be misinformation. <full disclosure>I am Not necessarily a LLM fan to date. Let's be precise though.
