"Why do you think they're doing it?" I think they're doing this in hopes of understanding humans better. More specifically, our consciousness. If there's strong research and belief that the brain can be understood wholistically via statistics, then that explains all the heat behind AI. Data here is currency. Data of all kind all decision-making and creativity processes. All else is byproducts and unintended benefits and consequences. We most likely need a being ("higher being") that can communicate in our languages and can surpass our limitations to provide some insight into our consciousness. If SuperAI becomes this superior being that can explain our consciousness and goes as far as assisting with replication. That opens a new world. A new era of "playing God".
