Here’s the breakdown: it’s called supervised self-driving. On its own, it’s generally safe and not designed to put you in a fatal situation. However, the moment you manually press the accelerator, the system defers to the driver—self-braking is overridden and the time/opportunity for the system to react (brake, change lanes, etc.) is reduced. So if you apply throttle with a barrier ahead, the car will hit it at whatever speed you’ve chosen.
