i was hired by a publishing company to do 100-150 illustrations of character headshots for pitching their books. i was given the offer, signed the contract, and even created 4 sample images FOR FREE (which I considered a reasonable investment for a 6-8 month assignment). i had invested significant time and effort reviewing the work plans and character design descriptions, and even postponed a medical procedure in wait of my schedule (which the client knew about). i excitedly told everyone i knew about the project that i was chosen for over a dozen applicants. then rjght before i was set to start the first illustration, i got an email saying they just figured out how to use AI tools to create the illustrations, but they wanted me to stand by in case there were a few that they weren’t able to make with AI. I responded with an unreasonable amount of professionalism and simply said that i wonder if there was a misunderstanding as i thought the project was a reliable and secured thing. i asked if there was any other work they could utilize my services for as i turned down other opportunities to make this my main focus for the upcoming 6-8 months. and then they ghosted me. the end.
